Two employees of a non-governmental organization were blown up by a mine while carrying out demining operations in the village of Chardaghly in the Agdere district, Azerbaijan. The incident occurred on August 3, according to Report.az, citing the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA).
The victims were identified as 32-year-old Alzamin Surkhayly and 28-year-old Fizuli Mirzaev. Both were hospitalized in the emergency department of the Terter district hospital. Surkhayly was diagnosed with an amputation of the right shin at the ankle joint, while Mirzaev sustained multiple shrapnel wounds to the front wall of the abdomen, as reported by APA agency.
Since November 2020, when the 44-day war in Karabakh ended, until the end of December 2025, 415 people have become victims of mines and unexploded ordnance in Azerbaijan. Of these, 71 died and 344 were injured, according to data cited by the Caucasian Knot.
Residents of Karabakh villages have previously told the Caucasian Knot that they received mandatory mine safety training before resettlement and continue to be warned about dangerous areas. However, many uncleared territories remain near the former front line and destroyed settlements, and some detonations occur when people ignore warnings or breach barriers.
The head of the NGO 'Military Lawyers', Telman Abilov, noted that complete demining of Karabakh could take many years, as hundreds of kilometers of territory along the former line of contact remain potentially dangerous.
