A Merseyside man is due in court for an extradition hearing later this year after an international arrest warrant was issued by a Spanish court. Sonny Redmond, 33 and originally from Bootle, appeared before Westminster Magistrates' Court on June 11, with a final extradition hearing scheduled for October 26.

Redmond was previously due to stand trial in Liverpool for possession of a knife and phone while serving a sentence at HMP Liverpool. However, the case was discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service, and while in custody he was arrested in connection with the Spanish warrant.

The warrant is believed to have been issued after Redmond allegedly broke bail conditions in Spain. The ECHO understands he had been residing in the Costa Blanca area, a British expat hotspot, though it is unclear how long he lived there.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: 'We can confirm a man was arrested in June in connection with an arrest warrant issued by Spanish authorities. The 33-year-old man from Merseyside was arrested while in custody for an unrelated matter. He appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court on 11 June for the commencement of extradition proceedings to Spain. He has been remanded into custody to appear in court at a later date.'
