Repeated objects seem older than they are, study finds

The effect persisted even when participants were told in advance they would be asked about timing. In a week-long version with 60 participants, the effect replicated, with 47 of 60 showing the pattern. However, memory for timing largely collapsed in that longer experiment, with only 30 of 60 placing objects in better than random order.

The study also found that the effect depends in part on participants remembering that an image had been presented before. Two alternative explanations—event boundaries and conscious reasoning—were tested and did not fully account for the effect.
