Two brothers have been jailed for attempting to smuggle cannabis worth more than £200,000 into the UK from Thailand. Carl Threadgill, 36, and Josh Threadgill, 33, were sentenced at Manchester Crown Court on Monday.
Customs officers at Manchester Airport stopped Josh on June 6 after he appeared uncomfortable at baggage reclaim. He had two suitcases containing 32 packages of cannabis, weighing 36.55 kilograms. His brother Carl was also found with two suitcases containing a further 36.9 kilograms of cannabis.
The court heard that Josh claimed he was offered £10,000 to bring the suitcases back and was threatened that his house would be firebombed when he tried to back out. Carl said he was offered £15,000 to pay off a drug debt.
The combined street value of the 73.45 kilograms of cannabis was estimated at around £220,000. The judge noted an increase in drug mules from Thailand since cannabis was legalised there in 2022.
Josh was sentenced to 24 months in prison, while Carl received 26 months. The judge said immediate custody was necessary to deter others.
