5 ways to help kids adjust to the new school year

Experts say the real adjustment to school happens weeks after start. Tips include asking specific questions, watching for behavior changes, and keeping routines.

As the new school year begins, many parents focus on the first day, but child psychiatrists say the real adjustment often happens in the weeks that follow. New teachers, routines, classmates, and extracurricular activities can create stress that may not be immediately obvious.

Dr. Sascha Arbouet, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Bend Health, notes that children may show signs of stress through changes in mood, sleep, behavior, or motivation. 'Paying attention to changes in mood, sleep, behavior or school avoidance can help families identify concerns early,' she said.

To help children open up, experts suggest asking specific questions like 'What was the best part of your day?' instead of broad ones like 'How was school today?' Consistent, small conversations can help children share worries before they become bigger issues.

Maintaining consistent routines—such as regular sleep schedules and structured after-school activities—can help children feel secure. Caregivers should also avoid overscheduling, as children need time to recharge. Staying connected with teachers and other trusted adults can provide additional support.

If anxiety, mood changes, or school avoidance persist or interfere with daily life, it may be time to seek professional help. 'The earlier we identify concerns, the easier it is to provide support before small challenges become bigger obstacles,' said Arbouet.
