The San Diego Padres acquired left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray from the San Francisco Giants on Monday, bolstering their starting rotation with the former Cy Young Award winner.
In exchange, the Giants received right-hander Miguel Mendez and shortstop Joniel Hernandez, who are ranked as the Padres' No. 4 and No. 9 prospects, respectively, according to MLB Pipeline.
Ray, 34, has been outstanding since June, posting a 7-0 record with a 1.65 ERA in 10 appearances (nine starts). For the season, he holds a 3.08 ERA across 22 games (21 starts), his lowest since his Cy Young-winning 2021 campaign with Toronto.
Ray is owed $26 million in 2026 and will become a free agent after the season. Over 13 major league seasons, he has a 98-87 record with a 3.87 ERA and two All-Star selections.
Mendez, 24, has spent most of this season at Double-A San Antonio, while Hernandez, a 17-year-old from Cuba, has impressed in the Dominican Summer League with a .303/.424/.503 slash line.
