Cuba's National Electric Union said the country experienced another nationwide blackout on Sunday, with the national power system going down completely at 22:43 local time (02:43 GMT). The union made the announcement in a statement on social media.
The blackout follows a partial collapse of the national electric system on Saturday that left western provinces without power. The union said the earlier failure occurred at 6:07 pm local time between Matanzas and Pinar del Rio provinces, caused by transmission lines tripping.
According to the union, US sanctions have made it difficult for Cuba to import fuel and repair its aging power plants. Since October 2024, Cuba has faced multiple nationwide blackouts due to power plant failures, storms, and other reasons.
The latest outage comes amid ongoing tensions between Cuba and the United States. In July, a US State Department report accused Cuba of playing a leading role in shaping extremist movements and running espionage networks on US soil. Cuba dismissed the report as false, and President Miguel Diaz-Canel said it was part of a policy to turn Cubans against their revolutionary government.
