Fly-camping, littering, and vandalism have been reported across the Lake District National Park over the weekend, with incidents including discarded crisp packets on a lakeshore and destruction of planters at Bowness-on-Windermere.
Residents and regular visitors expressed anger at the acts, which occurred in areas such as the Buttermere Valley, Langdale, and Bowness-on-Windermere. Incidents have been occurring since spring but have increased in recent weeks due to peak visitor season.
Martin Barter discovered tents pitched beside a 'no camping' sign on the shores of Buttermere on Saturday. Camping beside any lakeshore in the park is against authority rules.
Anthony Bennett, a Bowness-on-Windermere resident, photographed a chaotic scene with plants destroyed and thrown into the road, litter scattered up the promenade, and bins emptied. Visitors also reported litter beside Buttermere and a full tent left behind.
Suzy Hankin, Area Ranger for the Lake District National Park Authority, said they are working with partners and communities to alleviate pressures in hot spot areas. She encouraged visitors to enjoy the scenery responsibly and opt for a picnic over a barbecue to protect the landscape from wildfires.
